Application Process
There are specific eligibility requirements to join the FBI. Those who complete the process become part of a dedicated team that keeps our country safe.
FBI eligibility
To be eligible for employment, you must meet the following guidelines before we will consider your application.
- You are a U.S. citizen.
- Your public record is in good standing with no felony convictions.
- You adhere to the FBI drug policy.
- You pass a urinalysis and a background investigation.
- Your student loan repayments are in good standing.
- You have filed all required annual federal, state and local taxes.
- You are current with any court-ordered child support payments.
- You have no engagement with organizations designed to overthrow the U.S. government.
- You are registered with the U.S. Selective Service (for males only).
Veterans' Preference
We strongly encourage military service members and veterans to apply. Veterans who apply may be eligible for Veterans' Preference.

Hiring process
We strive to provide a seamless hiring and onboarding process. Here is what you can expect after you apply for a position with the FBI.
- Eligibility and qualifications review
- An HR specialist will review your application to determine your eligibility.
- We will contact you to schedule an interview. Specialized career paths may require additional assessments.
- After passing interviews and applicable assessments, you will receive a conditional offer for FBI employment.
- You will complete a background investigation, including a polygraph, to receive an FBI Top Secret security clearance.
- After successfully completing your background investigation, you are eligible to receive a final job offer.
- We will schedule you for your first day at the FBI. You will attend orientation your first week and some positions require that you attend training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va.
